Ready to get rid of that old popcorn ceiling?

An unfortunate drawback to popcorn ceilings is the amount of work required to keep the surface area clean and fix any holes or cracks that may appear over time. Cobwebs, spiders, dust, and bits of dirt can easily get caught in the bumps, and smoke can eventually stain your ceiling, which can be difficult to remove. A duster or the brush head of your vacuum cleaner can help get rid of debris, but if you press too hard, raised particles of your ceiling may break and fall off, causing more aesthetic harm than good.

Should too many bumps fall off while cleaning, or if any holes form in your ceiling, it is time-consuming to repair them. First, you need to scrape off all the bumps surrounding the damaged section and sand it down so it is completely smooth before applying some drywall plaster, sanding again, and painting it over.

You cannot paint this type of ceiling with a regular brush! The stubble will fall off once it is wet, so you need a segmented foam roller to do the job. Alternatively, spray products such as Homax provide a popcorn texture, but whatever you end up using may not be consistent or match up with the original design. It’s best to consult with a popcorn ceiling expert for cleaning and repairs.

Water damage will also cause the textured appearance to come loose and peel off over time. Leaks will only harm your ceiling, as the stipple will become heavy, and eventually start to fall. Kitchens, bathrooms, and spaces where moisture is prevalent should have smooth ceilings to avoid these problems.

How much for Popcorn Removal?

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Service We Perform

Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Removal of existing popcorn or any other kind of textured ceiling. Ideally the texture being removed was applied using joint compound.

Knockdown Texture Application

Application of knockdown texture on drywall.  We use the knockdown trowel process which is what you see in most new homes.

Ceiling Drywall Repairs

We fix ceilings that have cracks or loose tape at edges or seams. These repairs result in having to paint the entire section of ceiling.

Paint Ceilings

Once knockdown is applied we paint with high quality ceilings paint to ensure an even look.

Cover And Seal Ceiling Stains

It is common to have stains from water leaks, dirt, or from smoking cigarettes. We can apply stain sealer to cover up those ugly stains.

Popcorn Ceiling Repair

We can make repairs in cracked, flaking, or peeling popcorn.  These are matching repairs and we can get pretty close but rarely exact.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process

          Knockdown Mud Trowel Process

The following are typical things that are done during the texture knockdown process:

01

Prep the space

We clear furniture from the room if possible. If it's not feasible then furniture is moved to the center of the room and covered with plastic.  All walls are masked off with plastic so that the texture being applied does not land walls and then require additional cleanup.  Entry doors are masked off to keep dust from floating into other rooms. Floors are masked with paper.  Wall light fixtures and hanging lights are masked with plastic. Typically electrical wall plats, baseboards, and wall or ceiling joists are protected by the masking plastic already attached to the walls against over spray.

02

Smooth the surface
After the room is prepped, the existing popcorn is literally scrapped off with a giant spatula looking tool. The popcorn is dampened with water and then slowly removed. We never know what's under the popcorn so there are times when divots r cracks may have to be spackled smooth. The goal at this step is to have as smooth a ceiling as possible.

03

Apply primer to drywall
In order to have a uniform look after applying the new texture, it is critical to apply primer.  Keep in mind that after the popcorn is removed there will be all kinds of seams and lines showing.  If those seam lines are not primed they will bleed through after the knockdown is applied.  The primer also serves as a glue to bind the new texture with the drywall.

04

Splatter the surface
At this step, the painter will mix mud, pour the it into the hopper or machine, and then start systematically applying the joint compound to the ceiling. Once this starts, the painter does not stop until the entire sections are completed.  once the texture has set for the proper time--about 15-20 minutes--then the high peaks are knocked down with the knockdown knife.

Frequently Asked Popcorn Ceilings Questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • How much does it cost to remove popcorn ceilings?

Please check out our 'How much will popcorn ceiling removal cost' page for a detailed breakdown.

  • How messy is popcorn ceiling removal?

Popcorn ceiling removal can get a bit messy.  The main reason is the dust that can be created when scraping off the existing popcorn texture.

In order to minimize dust it is best to slightly wet the existing ceiling.

Typical preparation for any popcorn ceiling removal project includes the following:

    • move furniture out of a room if possible
    • mask off walls and furniture
    • cover all floors
    • lots and lots of plastic is used for masking walls

Once the project is completed plan on conducting a deep cleaning as dust will settle in the room.

It is a bit messy but worth the effort.  Once you lookup and see those nice clean flat ceilings the clean up is a small price to pay.

  • Is removing popcorn ceiling worth it?

Ask any realtor out there if popcorn ceilings will help sell your house faster and the answer will be NO. So from a selling perspective it's well worth the investment as applying a flat knockdown texture will make your house look updated and get your more money.

If you recently purchased a home with popcorn ceilings, the time to update is before the furniture is moved into the house.  This way there isn't as much to worry about when it comes to the cleanup.

From an updating perspective, getting rid of popcorn ceilings will keep your ceilings cleaner and brighter.  If you have popcorn ceilings you probably can see dark cob webs  or dirt that clings to the popcorn kernels.

  • Is primer required to apply new knockdown texture on ceilings?

YES!  We have found over the years that the primer applied to the drywall after the popcorn texture has been removed leaves a better result.

The primer blocks out old drywall seam tape so that it doesn't bleed through the paint that goes over the new texture.

In addition the primer will bind the new texture to the drywall much better that if none is used.  Think of it as the glue that holds the new texture to the ceiling drywall.

  • Can I do my own popcorn ceiling removal?

Taking on a popcorn ceiling removal and knockdown application project takes a lot of patience and the proper tools.

If not done properly you can damage the ceiling drywall or leave a surface that will not bind with the new texture. Worse thing that can happen is you apply the new texture and it start to flake or peel off quickly.

This is one of those projects that you definitely want to hire someone to do for you.
