Paint on interior walls typically gets dirty or stained or rubbed away from normal wear and tear.  It rarely just starts to flake off (unless there's moisture issues). 

Paint on trim tends to get nicked or chipped with wear and tear.  The biggest culprit for trim paint issues are the natural oils from your hand. If you ever look at kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities you can easily tell where it's being touched the most by the worn out look of the paint.

Fading does occur wherever the sun has the most exposure.  This happens to walls and painted trim. With time the sun's UV rays just slowly  wear down the chemical that gives the paint it's sheen.

If you have  you have a large household--especially with little kids--expect to be painting more often than someone that doesn't.

That's why when selecting the grade of paint it's important you select a grade that's going to hold up to wear and tear as long as possible.  It  may cost you a little more upfront but it will last longer on your house.  

Primer should be used on:

• drywall repair patches
• stained or brand new trim, vanities, wood
• water stains 

Think of primer as glue that bonds the surface being painted and the new paint. 

Some designers and architects will call for primer as a base to enhance color.  We would just say that you are not really going to know if it makes a difference or at least enough of  difference to take that extra step.  In this case it would be worthwhile to compare a section with a primer base vs one without a primer base.

Painting walls typically goes pretty fast but it all depends on a couple of things:

• height of the walls
• number of rooms
• furniture, carpet, or other things in the way
• size of crew

Painting trim is more involved because of the following:

• masking off 
• de-glossing
• sanding
• applying primer
• removing doors and hardware

It is critical you get assigned a crew that can complete the work in a timely manner.  If it's a full interior including walls, trim, kitchen cabinets, ceilings, and everthing else, that crew may need to be a crew of at least 4 painters.
